Jadabganj bamboo handicrafts village
Many people in the villages of Bengal make a living by creating handicrafts with their own hands. Their handiwork graces various places at home and abroad. One such village is Jadabganj village, which is located just 5 kms from Chandni Jaltungi. It is an Adivasi (tribal) village. There are 56 households of the Mahali community here. They split the bamboo to extract splints and create beautiful, elegant, and useful bamboo items. The lamp shades, flower vases, pen stands, ‘toka’ (headwear), water bottles, jewelry boxes, flower baskets, general baskets, winnowing fans, and dustbins made from bamboo splints are very charming and sturdy.
These beautifully crafted bamboo items reach the drawing rooms of Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi and even abroad. You would spot these beautifully crafted artworks in various handicraft fairs too. Once you enter Jadabganj Village, you would find artisans splitting bamboo by the roadside to make Kulo (winnowing fan) or other household items like Jhuri (baskets). There is still a good demand for such strong Kulo or Jhuri in the rural areas.
It takes around 15 minutes by car or Toto to reach Jadabganj Village from Chandni Jaltungi. Here you can watch the artisans extracting bamboo splints and creating wonders from them. You can also buy these beautiful handicrafts directly from the artisans in Jadabganj Village.
